Happy New Years!

Happy New Year's Eve!

2009 has been amazing, but it feels like it went by so fast, doesn't it? We're about to start a new decade! I'm turning 14 this coming January, but even I had to step back and think about all the time that's passed. What did you do this year? What did you see? What did you learn? I know it sounds corny, but like Thanksgiving, New Years is a great time to think about what you're thankful for. Except, on New Years, you have more things to take into consideration than you did on Thanksgiving. As well as being thankful for the bare essentials and the people who are close to you, you also have the opportunity to be thankful for all the places you've been, all the people you've seen, all the things you've experienced, etc. over the past year.

With that in mind, please enjoy these fireworks >> pour l'occasion.

Christmas '09!

Christmas ’09 was amazing!

Here’s my 12/25/09 haul:

On my list of fashion/style books that I really wanted to get! Check it out >> The Nylon Book of Global Style.

A really cool book – Scott Schuman blogs about really well dressed people all over the world. Check it out >> The Sartorialist by Scott Schuman.

A really gorgeous edition of Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell – definitely going on my list of things to read.

Another amazing book! (The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde – I’ve been meaning to read this!) Do you see that beautiful peacock feather pattern? I am going to ask my aunt and uncle where they got these fabulous editions! (I’ll post a link when I get it.) Thanks so much for these 4 amazing books Aunt M and Uncle B!

Mrs. Kasoogi’s better half – Mr. Kasoogi.

This is what his information-tag says:

MR. KASOOGI

Mr. Kasoogi is a treasure hunter. He’s had a lot of practice hunting for smaller items like candy, donuts, and even fruit. Now he’s ready to take on the big challenges… But he needs a partner. Someone he can trust. Are you up for it? Will you be there when Mrs. Kasoogi turns the kitchen lights on and you’re caught with your hand in the cookie jar? Yes? Good! You take the blame! Mr. Kasoogi doesn’t mess with Mrs. Kasoogi.

The big gift of the year!! I knew I was getting an acoustic guitar this Christmas, but I had no idea what it would look like. My dad actually got me a hybrid guitar! If you plug it into an amplifier, it doubles as an electric. How cool is that? I think it’s beautiful, and I love it!

**Quick shout-out to the giver of that sunflower pillow! Thanks, Gma C! (I know you didn’t give it this Christmas, but it’s still well-loved over here!!)

A beautiful necklace! Thanks, Gma C! (I let my guitar wear it – I think I should give my guitar a name. I’ve met a lot of people who’ve done that. I can never think of cool enough names though. Should it be a boy, a girl? Suggestions, anyone?)

This incredibly comfortable coat from Grandma D and Grandpa B! Thanks you guys!

It’s so soft!!

Do you see these earrings?! Aren’t they freakishly awesome!? My dad got them for me at an art store that sells things made by local artists. In case you’re wondering what they’re made of……. Yes, they are made of spoons. I think they’re fabulous.

Having this extended holiday has been great. The “blizzard” gave us three days off of school this week. Unfortunately, however, it meant that I couldn’t participate in a Secret Santa gift-giving that my friends and I are doing. We were supposed to exchange gifts this Tuesday. The last two years, we slipped each other presents through our locker slots, which really limited what we could give one another. This year, we decided we should try something new. Everyone would write their name and one to three things that they would like to receive (all under $20) on an index card. Whichever name you picked out of the lunchbox (we didn’t have a hat to pull from, we aren’t allowed to wear hats at our school) was the person you had to get a gift for. You didn’t have to get a person one of the things they wanted on their card, but it gave the person (the gift giver) an idea of what their gift-ee (receiver of their gift) wanted. My person wanted a $10-$15 gift certificate (of any kind), or toe-socks. I jumped for the toe-socks idea. She would probably be expecting her Secret Santa to just get her a gift certificate, so I hope she doesn’t see this coming. And don’t worry, my giftee doesn’t know about my blog, so she won’t see this before I get a chance to give it to her.

Do you think she’ll like them? I think they’re pretty snazzy, as toe-socks go. :)

My parents and I have a tradition on Christmas day. We don’t go change out of PJ’s and we just sit around the house all day, sitting next to the fire, watching movies, hanging out. This year, I changed that tradition. I was feeling really antsy, so I told my mom and dad that I really wanted to go out to see a movie or do something.

We ended up watching two movies.

Up in the Air

It’s Complicated

I’ll probably post reviews of one or both of them soon.

I hope you all had great holidays!

Now it’s time to get ready for 2010!!

Video of the Month >> Dec. 2009

"Id Engager"
of Montreal

A burrowing squirrel....

Today, my dad was looking out of a window facing our backyard and he saw something pop up out of the snow. "Woah! What was that? Did you guys see that?" he exclaimed. I'd been looking at the TV and my mom had been vacuuming, so we hadn't seen anything. "What? What?" we asked. "I saw something pop up out of the snow," he replied. We looked out the back window and we couldn't see past the snow on the deck.

(Remember this?)
So, we walked over to our back door, and saw a cute, tiny, chubby, furry little thing poke it's head out of the snow. My parents and I decided it was a squirrel who was trying to find food it had stored for the winter.

You can't see him very well in this video, but that's only because we were afraid that if we went outside, he would run away.

We were right. I wanted to get a better view of him, so I opened the door and walked outside to get a better video. He ran away.

[I was so upset. Just listen to me whimper, "He left. No!"]

Have a great Christmas Eve everyone!

Happy Holidays!

It’s Christmastime again, and that means it’s time to bring out the artificial tree! 100% better for the environment (and as far as I’m concerned, 100% prettier!).

Here are some of my favorite ornaments.
White chocolate covered strawberries are great to eat, but also make great ornaments!

Same with pickles!

Here’s a cop.

And here’s a bellhop.

Monkey see, monkey do.

Monkey 1:

Monkey 2:

Here’s the cello-man!

And here’s a mini-violin! (I play violin, so I really like this one!)

And don’t forget Santa!

Sort of creepy, but at least he sparkles. (Wait, when did we start talking about Edward Cullen?)

We have a tree theme at Christmas. Just look at our piano.

This is a cool light-up tree that my mom’s friend found in her attic.

This one is really pretty:

This one is one that I have to decorate:

Yes, I put those tiny ornaments on by hand! It’s my favorite part of setting up for Christmas, getting to decorate that tiny tree!

Here’s the tiny tree next to our main tree.

Major contrast, isn’t it?

Here’s a pink reindeer with flowers on his chest!

Here’s the coolest crèche scene donkey I’ve ever seen!

And don’t forget the creepy elf that has no hands!

My dad got it at an antiques shop because he remembered having them when he was a kid. (But seriously, where did that guy’s hands go?)

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!

Let it Snow!

As you may have heard, the East Coast had a blizzard a few days ago. It was amazing. In Maryland, it was non-stop snow for twenty-four hours, but it didn’t feel like a blizzard, it wasn’t too windy. So here’s the effect it had on my house – mind you, I took these pictures about a day or two after the actually storm, so it might have melted a bit.

This is the view from my bedroom window – yes, my bedroom is over the garage, and yes, during the winter it is very cold!

My parents did an awesome job clearing the driveway, didn’t they? (Helpful daughter that I am, when I learned that I’d be getting two days off from school, I slept in till two in the afternoon.)

Another view from my bedroom window, that’s my neighbor’s front yard.

This is our back porch. We had to clear a walkway for my dog so that he could get down to the yard. (I have a toy poodle, and he can have trouble walking around in four inches of snow, so he would have been helpless compared to the two and a half feet we got here!) As a result, on either side of the walkway there are three or four feet of snow!

Another view of my back porch – look at that snow!

And look at our grill!

Here’s my neighbor’s back yard. Do you see those chairs?

This is our back yard gate and our neighbor’s back yard gate. You can usually see twice as much of them.

Don’t worry, that window is the window to my neighbor’s basement, it isn’t a regular window! We didn’t get 12 feet of snow!

My toy poodle, Charlie, hanging out in my room, staying warm:

The snow makes him sleepy!

Actually, he’s always sleepy.

I woke him up to get this shot of him, and as you can see, he’s pretty disoriented when he wakes up. (It didn’t help that the flash was on! Sorry, Charlie!)

More Urban Outfitters free downloads! Music Mondays are AMAZING!!!

Urban Outfitters is giving away five free songs every Monday in what they call Music Mondays. Way better than the free downloads they've been giving out recently on iTunes if you ask me. Here's this week's downloads - sorry about the cutoff, but if the playlist was any bigger, it wouldn't fit on my blog!

Here are the songs:
Alexandra Hope >> Whatever you Want >> album: Manimal
Headlights >> Get Going >> album: Polyvinyl
Restless People >> Days of Our Lives (Light in Mix) >> album: Family Edition
The Phenomenal Handclap Band >> 5 to 20 >> album: Friendly Fire
Mariachi el Bronx >> Quinceniera >> album: Swami

I sort of like the third song, until the part where random electronic sounds start going off and the singers start babbling gibberish. I don't really like the fourth song, "5 to 20," but at some parts of the song, the singer reminds me of one of my favorite Japanese bands, Pizzicato Five. The singers voice, that is.

Here's a Pizzicato Five song, "Happy Sad."

I really like the first, second and fifth songs on this Music Monday's playlist. The first song, "Whatever you Want," by Alexandra Hope, and the second, “Get Going,” by Headlights, are really fun and laid-back. The fifth song, “Quenceniera,” by Mariachi el Bronx, is really cool. A mariachi band playing in the background, and lyrics that don’t seem like they should work with the music, but do.

That's what I think is so fantastic about these free downloads. As opposed to iTunes' one or two downloads that could you would never purchase (recently, the downloads haven't been that great >> too many annoying teen and twenty-something pop-stars), having five downloads to pick and choose from gives you more options. Urban Outfitters has much cooler music, too.

Some music I got from the iTunes podcast, KEXP Song of the Day

Get a playlist! Standalone player Get Ringtones

Here's a playlist I've put together of songs I've gotten from an iTunes podcast called KEXP Song of the Day. The playlist literally gives you a free song every weekday!!!

My favorite song in this whole playlist is the last one, "I Say Fever" by Ramona Falls. My dad told me he thought it sounded a lot like Depeche Mode. I just think it's a really cool song. You can't tell half of what he's saying, but it doesn't really matter, it just has a neat sound.

Here are the lyrics, in case you're wondering what he's saying (I got these from songlyrics.com):

Before she met me she took herself to wait five years
After I met her, her teacher said best wait five years
I ask my neighbors, they said it's wise to wait five years

I say fever

I tell the friend how I'm feeling and listening her sad (side)
Cause she feels that no man will ever desire her so bad (back)
How dare I feel this and do not but sit on my hands

I say fever

Ow(n)ed my heart like a hot potato
Push the cart for an (ovulata)

This is just to code to decipher
Found the plowman chased the piper

That is up to you
That's all now
These are the one's who talk

Never (leki - lucky?)
Leads her to kiss him

(To close) five years go by and we are no longer here
I blame myself to for not taking steps to drawn her near
Try to decide what to do now based on love not fear

I say fever

Fo(u)r years

Crazy right? Even the person who posted the lyrics wasn't quite sure what the guy was saying!

Here's the video of "I Say Fever" by Ramona Falls

Most of the songs from my original playlist are posted above, but here are some that I couldn't find on playlist.com:

Beirut - The Akara

Lusine - Two Dots

Grand Hallway - Raindrops

The Heavy - How You Like Me Now?

I'll probably publish another post within the next few weeks. Probably a movie review or something of the like. !@#$%^&*()
